Rossett School has paid tribute to Harrogate man and former student Sam Gibson, who has died in a car crash.
Police officers responded to reports of a vehicle leaving the road on the A59 near Upper Poppleton, between the junctions of Newlands Lane and Hodgson Lane, at about 7am on Sunday.
They discovered Mr Gibson’s grey Peugeot 208 car, which had left the road and landed on its roof.
The 24-year-old was certified dead at the scene.
Rossett School described Mr Gibson as a popular student who was a regular in theatrical performances.
A school spokesperson said:
“Sam was a popular student in both the lower school and in the sixth form. A leading light in the performing arts, he performed and supported other students in classic productions such as ‘Oliver!’ when he was here at Rossett.
“He will be remembered as someone who was a friend to many; a champion for those less fortunate than him and an active fundraiser for charity. The thoughts of the whole Rossett community are with Sam’s family at this difficult time.”

Police investigate serious crash on Cold Bath Road
Police are investigating a serious crash in Harrogate which left one person unconscious.
The collision happened on Cold Bath Road on Sunday (March 6) at 3.10am when a Volkswagen Golf heading towards Otley Road hit two parked cars.
North Yorkshire Police said the car was carrying a number of passengers, one of whom was left unconscious on the road. The driver is believed to have left the scene.
A police statement added:
“It is only by sheer luck that the collision didn’t result in a fatality.
“As part of the investigation we would like to appeal to local residents and businesses to check their CCTV systems and ring doorbells around the time of the collision as it may have captured the vehicle, the collision, and anyone making off from the scene shortly afterwards.
“Additionally, if anyone has any other information about the incident which may assist our enquiries please contact us quoting reference 12220038835.”

Pedestrian hit by van on busy Harrogate road
A man was injured as he crossed a busy Harrogate street this morning.
The man was crossing Bower Road when he was struck by the vehicle, which had just turned left from Franklin Road.
The pedestrian was on the ground for several minutes, causing traffic to be diverted, but remained conscious. It is not known how serious his injuries are.
Several police cars attended the scene but North Yorkshire Police has not responded to requests for information.
Eyewitnesses described the man, whose name is not known, as elderly and said a large crowd gathered to offer help.
Retail staff on Commercial Street opposite also came to the man’s aid before paramedics arrived.
The incident happened at about 10.40am this morning.

Traffic and Travel Alert: Two lanes closed southbound on A1 (M) at J49 for Dishforth and Ripon, 20 minute delays expected
Two of the three lanes heading southbound on the A1 (M) are closed following an accident, delays are reported to be up to 20 minutes.
The accident is affecting the road heading towards J49 for Ripon and Dishforth.
National Highways is warning motorists about delays of up to 20 minutes if heading southbound.

Emergency services were called to North Rigton this morning after a car crashed into a house.
Images show a silver Ford Fiesta car struck the corner of a cottage on Rigton Hill, just north from the Square and Compass pub.
Police and fire crews responded to the incident at around 8am and were able to manage traffic while ensuring the scene was safe.
North Yorkshire Police said the incident caused “significant damage to the front of the property and the vehicle”. It added:
“Thankfully, no one was injured and the homeowner was not inside when it occurred.”
Police and fire crews said this was a damage-only collision and there were no reports of any injuries.
North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said:
“This was a single vehicle road traffic collision involving a car impacting a building. All the persons were out of the vehicle on the arrival of the fire crews, who worked to make the scene and vehicle safe.”

A recovery vehicle arrived to remove the car just after 9.30am.
Police are investigating the collision and any witnesses are asked to call North Yorkshire Police on 101, select option 1, and speak to the Force Control Room. The reference number is NYP-07012022-0047.
North Yorkshire Police has arrested two teenagers after a stolen car crashed into several parked vehicles on Dragon Parade in Harrogate.
The Stray Ferret reported on the crash on November 17 after a bystander sent us photos of the aftermath.
Police said today the occupants abandoned the vehicle, which was later found to be stolen.
They added a 17-year-old male had been arrested on suspicion of aggravated vehicle taking and property damage. He was interviewed and released on bail.
A 16-year-old male voluntarily handed himself into the police and was also interviewed on suspicion of aggravated vehicle taking and property damage. He has been released under investigation.
Enquiries are ongoing.

Driver escapes serious injury in Knaresborough crash
A motorist was lucky to escape serious injury when his car overturned near Knaresborough yesterday.
Traffic Constable David Minto, one of two police officers who attended the scene, tweeted about the incident today.
TC Minto, who is based in Harrogate, said the crash happened near Copgrove, which is five miles from Knaresborough. He added:
“The driver and sole occupant of the vehicle was taken to hospital with minor injuries.
“He was discharged a short while later.”
TC Minto added that no other vehicles were involved.

Two men taken to hospital after Starbeck car crash
Two men have been taken to hospital after a crash involving two cars in Starbeck.
It happened at about midday today at the junction of High Street and The Avenue.
A police officer at the scene told the Stray Ferret the crash occurred when a car on The Avenue pulled out onto High Street.
The officer added the male driver of one of the vehicles, and his male passenger, had been taken to hospital. Their injuries are not thought to be serious.
A female driver of the other car did not require hospital, the officer said.
Traffic was heavy shortly after the incident but by 1pm it had returned to normal, with the damaged cars moved to the side of the road.

Police appeal after car crashes into Kirk Deighton bus shelter
North Yorkshire Police is appealing for witnesses after a car crashed into a stone bus shelter in Kirk Deighton.
The 75-year-old driver and the 51-year-old male passenger suffered serious injuries and had to be taken to hospital.
The woman was driving a red Suzuki Swift south on the B6164 from Knaresborough to Wetherby when the collision happened at about 4.45pm on Friday.
The unnamed pair are both from Wetherby.
Police are asking anyone who witnessed the crash or saw the car before the collision to get in touch.
Anyone with dashcam footage nearby is also being asked to call 101 and ask for TC161 Steve Wood.

Car crash causing delays on Harrogate’s Leeds Road
A car accident is causing heavy disruption on Leeds Road in Harrogate this afternoon.
Officers from North Yorkshire Police are currently diverting traffic as only one lane remains open.
