A man has been arrested following a car crash and suspected assault in Harrogate last night.
North Yorkshire Police today said two vehicles collided on Otley Road at the junction with Wharfedale Place at around 6pm.
According to a force statement, the two men then got into an “altercation at the scene” and both sustained injuries. The statement added:
“The man in his 30s was taken to hospital for treatment in relation to chest injuries. His injuries are believed not to be life-threatening.
“A man in his 60s was arrested on suspicion of assault and was also taken to hospital for facial injuries.”
Police said an investigation has now been launched.

Top US colonel due in court today over Harrogate schoolboy crash
The two-day trial of a highly decorated American colonel accused of seriously injuring two schoolboys in a collision in Harrogate is due to begin today.
Benjamin Oakes, 46, of Tewit Well Avenue, Harrogate, is charged with causing injury by careless or inconsiderate driving on Yew Tree Lane on February 2 this year.
Two 15-year-old boys, who cannot be named for legal reasons, suffered serious injuries in the collision near Ashville College.
Mr Oakes’ LinkedIn profile, which was taken down before the case first came to court in August, stated he was chief of the space policy division for the US joint chiefs of staff at the Pentagon.
The joint chiefs of staff consists of the most senior leaders in the United States Department of Defense, which advises the president.
Today’s hearing is due to take place at York Magistrates Court.
Mr Oakes pleaded not guilty when the case opened in Harrogate in August. Both he and the magistrates opted not to send the case to crown court, where he would have faced a jury trial.
The schoolboys are expected to give evidence via a video link during the trial.

Police car involved in Killinghall collision
A police car was involved in a two-vehicle crash in Killinghall today in which both drivers were taken to hospital.
North Yorkshire Police said it was contacted at 3.45pm today about a collision between a white Hyundai car and a police car on Otley Road.
It is believed the incident occurred at the junction with Grainbeck Lane.
The police statement said:
“Emergency services attended the scene. No serious injuries have been reported, but both drivers of the vehicles have attended hospital with minor injuries.
“Road closures were put in place between Lund Lane and Otley Road, to allow officers to determine the circumstances around the collision and to enable the vehicles to be recovered. These have now been lifted and the road is now open.”
It added:
“While the police car involved will have audio and video recordings of the collision, officers are still keen to hear from any other witnesses who saw the collision and/or recorded dashcam footage.”

Road reopens in Ripon after Toyota crashes into tree
A section of one of the main roads in Ripon closed this afternoon due to a crash.
Bondgate Green was blocked between Farmison & Co and the Ripon bypass after a black Toyota car collided with a tree.
No other vehicles were involved.
North Yorkshire Police said the incident happened at about 11.50am.
A spokesperson added:
“A black Toyota Yaris car ended up crashing into a tree. The driver was taken to hospital by ambulance for treatment. Her dog was also checked over by a vet.
“The driver reported a small dark car, possibly a Fiat, had caused her to take evasive action. The driver did not stop as they headed to Ripon city centre. They are urged to contact the police as soon as possible to assist the investigation.
“There was only limited traffic disruption while the ambulance was in attendance. The car was recovered at 1.10pm.

Boy, 17, dies after car hits wall near Brimham Rocks
A 17-year-old boy has been killed after a car collided with a wall near Brimham Rocks, near Pateley Bridge.
The teenager, who has not been named, was a passenger in a grey Peugeot 107 when it hit the wall on Brimham Rocks Road at 6.50pm last night.
North Yorkshire Police today appealed for witnesses and information.
The force said in a statement:
“Tragically, a 17-year-old boy, a passenger in the 107 died at the scene of the collision. The boy’s family have been informed and are being supported by specially trained officers.
“Three other occupants were left with minor injuries and the driver is helping with the police with their enquiries.
“The road was closed for several hours to allow investigation work to take place at the scene of the collision.”
Police are urging anyone who saw the collision, or the car involved prior to the collision, to get in touch.
Brimham Rocks Road
Officers think that the car left the Fulford area of York at 11am on the same day and travelled to Brimham Rocks via Kirk Hammerton, Green Hammerton and Knaresborough.
They are particularly keen to hear from anyone who has captured any dashcam footage of the vehicle prior to the collision.
