The director of a Harrogate company says that saunas and steam rooms have become a "hot topic" as more people realise how they can benefit their physical and mental health.

Jack Smale's firm, Steam & Sauna Innovation, installs saunas and steam rooms across the UK, from Cornwall to the Scottish Highlands, and as far afield as Italy, Cyprus and the United Arab Emirates. It has an exclusive partnership with high-end Italian company Effegibi, and is the only company in the UK to offer a complete solution, from design and procurement to installation and maintenance.

Jack said:

“Over the last three to four years, saunas and steam rooms have become a real ‘hot topic’. More people are realising that they offer genuine health benefits.”

Steam rooms generally operate at temperatures of 40 to 50 degrees Celsius, and saunas are even hotter, at 65 to 90 degrees. This causes the blood vessels to dilate, increasing blood circulation and speeding up the body's healing processes.

According to the world-renowned Mayo Clinic in the United States, regular saunas can help reduce the risk of high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, stroke, and Alzheimer’s disease, as well as rheumatic pain, some skin conditions and even common flu and headaches.

Some Effegibi home saunas can easily fit into a good-sized bedroom.

The physiological responses produced in a sauna are similar to those produced by moderate- or high-intensity physical activity such as walking, and endorphins released by the body due to the heat of a sauna or steam room can minimise pain and simulate a “runner's high.”

Jack said:

“Aside from all the evidence-based health gains, there are other benefits that are less tangible, but no less real. For example, one of the reasons I love my sauna is that it’s one place I can’t take my phone. It’s a real switch-off environment, so you can properly relax.”

But while saunas and steam rooms may sound like the preserve of the wealthy, Jack says they’re far more affordable than some other “nice to haves”. A fully installed and serviced sauna can cost less than £10,000, which is very affordable when compared with other leisure facilities such as tennis courts or swimming pools.

Jack said:

“You don’t have to only enjoy these kinds of facilities at Rudding Park or Grantley Hall – you can have them in your own home.
“If you’ve got a decent-sized spare room that you never use, and fancy turning it into somewhere you’ll love, that’s where we can help.”
