Plans have been revealed to bring Knaresborough's former cattle market site back into use after 20 years.

According to documents submitted to North Yorkshire Council, Scriven Park Estates has applied to demolish the current buildings and build a commercial unit.

A design and access statement submitted by Harrogate Architectural Ltd on behalf of the applicant, said the owner secured the site late last year.

It added:

"The site purchase by our clients and expansion of their landholding in the immediate area offers a genuine opportunity to make a significant investment in the site.
"Demolition of the buildings is unfortunate, but decades of neglect and damage now render the authority’s preference to retain and convert the buildings no longer possible."

The cattle market, near Stockwell Road, was built in 1907 close to the train station so livestock could be transported easily.

The disused 0.32-hectare site is allocated for commercial and residential development in the Harrogate District Local Plan 2014-35, which outlines where development can take place.

It currently contains stone buildings with corrugated sheet roofs covering an auction ring and internal livestock pens with ancillary offices.

The design and access statement said the applicant wants to talk to the council about creating a new access road from Ash Tree Road. It added:

"The demolition of redundant and dilapidated buildings and replacement with a commercial unit is felt to be entirely in accord with this allocation.
"Rebuilding to the same bulk and form utilising salvaged materials to create a use promoted by the authority does make a substantial and positive contribution to the character of the area, and the local economy whilst paving the way for future development.
"It is therefore hoped the local authority concurs with this assessment and the proposals and supports the application in due course."
