The Pateley Bridge parking permit scheme is set to return this year.

The scheme, which was introduced by Pateley Town Council and the now-defunct Harrogate Borough Council, offers residents two hours of free parking in two of the town's main car parks each day.

Nidd Walk Car Park and Southlands Car Park are included in the scheme. However, Nidderdale Showground Car Park, which is owned by Nidderdale Agricultural Society and was previously included in the permit, is not.

North Yorkshire Council, which owns the two car parks, said permits will cost £14 this year. It said the £2 increase was "in line with car park tariffs and permit prices across the county, which have not changed in the last three years".

Town councillors, along with members of community group Nidderdale Plus, will be selling the permits at Nidderdale Plus Hub on King Street this month.

Pateley Bridge residents can buy permits on Friday, March 22, from 1pm to 4pm, and on Saturday, March 23, from 10am – 3pm.

People can pay by cash or card and must bring a note of their vehicle registration.

The permits are valid from April 1, 2024, to March 31, 2025.

Future of scheme is 'yet to be determined'

Despite the popularity of the scheme, which last year saw more than 500 permits sold, its future s uncertain.

North Yorkshire Council, which succeeded Harrogate Borough Council last year, is conducting a countywide review of parking.

Steve Brown, the council's head of parking services, said:

“We are preparing to conduct a parking review in the next year which will cover the permit scheme in Pateley Bridge along with many others. Therefore, any decision on its future is yet to be determined.
“We will review parking across the whole of North Yorkshire. As such, new local transport plans are being drawn up and parking policies will be formed to support these.”
