A vigil calling for an immediate ceasefire in Palestine will be held in Ripon this afternoon.

The Stray Ferret reported on the first vigil in Ripon in November.

Regular gatherings have been held ever since but the time has now being switched from the morning to Monday afternoons.

Organiser Andy Croft told the Stray Ferret:.

"With the death toll in Gaza now approaching 27,000, it is tragic to think that we are still having to come to Ripon Market Square each Monday, to call on politicians in the UK and around the world to bring an end to this slaughter.
"Since we held our first vigil on November 20, the number of dead on all sides, has more than doubled from 12,000 and many among that number are women, children and non-military male civilians, who have no means of escape from this nightmare situation of being stuck in Gaza, where there are no places of safety."

Mr  Croft (pictured centre in our photograph) stressed those involved were not taking sides and were carrying the flags of both Israel and Palestine "to support the growing call for an immediate ceasefire".

He added:

“Too many people have already died and it is heartbreaking to hear about the civilian casualties and see television pictures of tiny babies having to be moved from intensive care incubators because the hospital that they were in no longer has the electricity to power them.”

Today's half hour vigil will begin at 3.30pm. Police and local authorities have been advised about the switch of time from afternoon to morning.
