A councillor has called for roadworks to be organised better as six weeks of delays on the A61 Leeds Road at Pannal draw to an end this week.

Northern Gas Networks started carrying out utility repairs and maintenance work near to the traffic lights at the junction with Follifoot Road in the middle of last month.

Temporary traffic lights in both directions on the A61 at Pannal Bank and Follifoot Road have causing lengthy rush-hour delays, with queues backing up to Fullwith Mill Lane Lane in Harrogate and the Thirkill Drive mini- roundabout on Princess Royal Way.

Councillor John Mann, a Conservative who represents Oatlands and Pannal on North Yorkshire Council, told the Stray Ferret he spoke to staff on site yesterday (May 19). He said the site supervisor said a tarmacking wagon was due to come today and the surface would then require 24 hours to harden.

Northern Gas Networks hopes to fully re-open Leeds Road, Follifoot Road and Pannal Bank later this week, he added.

Work was initially due to end on May 13 but technical difficulties replacing the decades-old pipework led to delays.

Cllr Mann said:

“These road closures, when combined with roadworks  at the opposite end of the village, have caused extreme frustration and mayhem on the roads especially at rush-hour.
"This has sometimes resulted in quite extensive red light running and even the verbal abuse of Northern Gas staff working in the road, neither of which is acceptable.
"I’m just grateful that nobody has been hurt, and I’ve asked the council, who issue the utilities companies with permits to work in the road, to ensure that Northern Gas better organises their maintenance work in future so that we never again get the situation in which a village is hemmed in by several different roadworks being undertaken simultaneously.”
