Neuhaus Belgian Chocolate opened its shop on James Street in Harrogate today.

The company's first UK store outside of London is based in the former Carl Scarpa women’s footwear unit.

A spokesperson for Neuhaus told the Stray Ferret last month it was working towards opening the store on March 2.

But a day ahead of schedule, it opened today as the first customers purchased high end chocolate gifts.

Staff said the company had been searching for new places to branch out into and Harrogate aligned with its brand.

A spokesperson said:

“Harrogate holds a special place for Neuhaus due to its unique blend of spa and cultural elements, premium shopping venues, vibrant gastronomy, and year-round activities.
"It aligns perfectly with our brand values, and we believe the cosy high street shopping culture in Harrogate is an ideal fit for Neuhaus chocolates.”

Staff told the Stray Ferret they aimed to offer a high-end chocolate experience where customers can try samples and learn about the history of each product, rather than a ‘grab and go’ chocolate shop.

Hand crafted chocolates created in Belgium on display in the new store.

The luxury chocolatier was established in 1857 and invented Belgian praline.

The store is close to Hotel Chocolat, which opened on James Street in 2021.

Neuhaus plans to launch its Easter collection in the next few weeks, when the shop will "explode with eggs" and see chocolate bunnies, eggs and spring gifts on sale.

The store will be open from 9am to 6pm Monday to Saturday and from 11am to 5pm on Sundays.
