A woman originally from Harrogate has made it into finals week of MasterChef.

Abi Kempley, 21, was born and brought up in Harrogate but now lives in Leeds and works in sales for her family’s business.

The BBC One cookery show, which sees UK chefs battle it out to win the MasterChef trophy, is now in its 20th series. It is judged and hosted by culinary duo John Torode and Gregg Wallace.

Abi appeared in tonight’s episode (Series 20, episode 21) — the last of the semi-finals — and made her way through to finals week.

In the episode the five contestants made dishes inspired from a past MasterChef contestant and had 90 minutes to cook a dish that would secure them a place in finals week.

Gregg Wallace said:

"Abi, for a contestant so young has incredible knowledge, great technique."

The judges asked Abi how she felt about being so close to the final.

She replied:

"I’ve obviously feeling really proud of myself for getting this far but when you get this far you just need to get further.”

Her inspiration for the dish was MasterChef champion 2011, Tim Anderson due to their shared love for creating Japanese food. She was aged 11 when he won the series.

In a previous interview with the BBC, she said:

“I’ve always loved Japanese and Asian flavours, and this is always what I love to eat when out. In 2020 I started trying to recreate these dishes from home and my cooking has developed from there.”

In the episode Abi made a butter and ginger-bakes haddock, a smoked haddock, scallop mousse and potted prawn ballotine, yuzu pickled vegetables and a miso beurre blanc and some sake-steamed mussels.

The judges loved her dish and announced her place in the final four alongside Chris, Brin, and Louise. Gregg Wallace said:

“One more contestant we feel did more than enough to show their real MasterChef credentials, Abi, congratulations, final week it is.”

Abi added:

"Mum’s going to be so proud I know she’s going to burst out crying as soon as I call her. She’s done it every round but I think this one will just top it all."

The finals are set to take place in Singapore. Finals week begins Monday 8pm on BBC One.
