A potholed road in Killinghall that forms part of the Harrogate cycle network is in line for repairs.

Grainbeck Lane links Killinghall and Knox Mill Lane on the network, and then extends into Bilton and Harrogate town centre.

It is also widely used by vehicles travelling between the A61 Ripon Road and the B6161 Otley Road as it avoids going through the centre of Killinghall.

Gia Margolis, a member of the campaign group Harrogate District Cycle Action and the leisure cycling group Wheel Easy, sent the Stray Ferret a photo showing the current state of the road.

Ms Margolis said although she was aware many other roads were in a poor state, she was particularly concerned about Grainbeck Lane because it was part of a route that aims to encourage cycling.

She added:

"Drivers will suffer from burst tyres or damaged suspension and cyclists can get thrown off if potholes are under water.
"North Yorkshire Council seems able to find funds from their reserves to add money to the Kex Gill rebuild and indeed millions to the A1 junction. But no money for local residents."

Karl Battersby, the council’s corporate director of environment, said in response to the concerns:

“We strive to keep our roads in the best condition for the money we have available. We have an annual highways maintenance budget to cover both planned maintenance programmes and responding to problems as they arise.
“An extensive programme of pothole repairs will be carried out along Grainbeck Lane within the next 30 days, weather permitting. We will then continue to monitor the road for defects.”
