A specialist dementia day care club is due to open in Follifoot next month.

The Rainbow Care Group, which is based in Knaresborough, already operates 15 similar clubs nearby in locations including Harrogate, Ripon, Knaresborough, Sicklinghall, Wetherby and Otley.

The new club, will be based at Follifoot Park Riding Centre on Pannal Road, will open on June 20.

Rainbow Care Group, which celebrates its 10th anniversary this year, plans to host tea parties in the viewing hut, overlooking the arena.

It will run animal-based activities and walks around the stables that enable people to pet the horses and take part in other dementia friendly activities.

The riding school already cater for people with disabilities.

It has two mechanical horses and a winch to assist those with mobility issues to mount horses, as well as stables and facilities for horse riding.

Debbie Cheetham, community engagement lead at the Rainbow Care Group, said:

“Sadly, due to the enormity of the dementia epidemic we face, we need to open more clubs to accommodate local people who are living with dementia.
"The positive news however is that we have lots of fun in the process. We try to find niche and unlikely locations for our clubs to offer our members a special and meaningful day out when they attend one of our clubs.”

The clubs offer activities such as football, bowling and quizzes. Each day care centre caters for 12 people and offers those with dementia specialist care as well as providing their families support and rest.

Ms Cheetham added:

“We don’t just sit around having cups of tea. We don’t want anyone to be confined to their homes and we are passionate about what we do."
“All of the activities we do are fun but act as cognitive therapy, we look like a group of people having fun but there is a reason behind everything we do. Many people think dementia just affects the elderly, but it is a misconception, dementia doesn’t discriminate.”

Dementia is an umbrella term for over 200 varieties of the disease. According to Dementia UK around 944,000 people are estimated to be living with dementia in the UK, and someone develops the condition every three minutes.

An open day at Follifoot Park Riding Centre will take place on Monday, June 17 between 11am and 2pm.
