A Harrogate law firm has appointed its first apprentice solicitor.
McCormicks, which is based on East Parade, has hired Sophie Hussain to the position.
Ms Hussain graduated from the University of Liverpool in 2020 with a first-class dual honours degree in law and criminology.
She will be based in the firm’s commercial property team and work on all aspects of transactional property work.
Claire Baker-Kemp, head of commercial property at McCormicks, said:
“Sophie has come to us with more than two years’ solid commercial property experience, which makes her appointment a real benefit to our clients.
“I am also very impressed by Sophie in the short time she has been here.”
Hull company acquires Harrogate care home
A Hull-based care company has acquired a Harrogate care home for an undisclosed sum.
HICA Group has taken on Hampden House on Duchy Road from Elizabeth Finn Homes.
The 66-bed purpose-built nursing home is located within the Duchy Estate and provides nursing care, short-stays and end-of-life care.
The employment of all 70 plus staff has been secured in the handover to new ownership and general manager Jane Hooren continues to lead the team.

A Harrogate law firm has appointed a new solicitor as part of its commercial property team.
McCormicks Solicitors, which is based on East Parade, has hired Janice Colley to the department.
She will be tasked with offering advice on commercial property matters and acquisitions and disposals, including specific expertise in licensed premises, especially pubs and hotels.
Claire Baker-Kemp, the senior associate at McCormicks who heads the department, said:

Harrogate business installs community defibrillator
A Harrogate environmental company has installed a defibrillator outside its offices for public use.
Adler and Allan, which is based on Victoria Avenue, put up the device so it can be used in emergencies such as cardiac arrest.

The company said it invested in the defibrillator in order to support staff and the local community.
Henrik Pedersen, chief executive officer at Adler and Allan, said:

“That’s why we have invested in 20 automated external defibrillators for key depots and offices across the group. Being a responsible business and supporting our local community is key for us, so making this device accessible to everyone in Harrogate was a logical decision.”

A Harrogate legal firm has made two new hires in a bid to strengthen its crime and fraud team.
McCormicks Solicitors, which is based on East Parade, has appointed associate solicitor Shah Ahmed and junior criminal law executive Eve Million.
Mr Ahmed joins from a Leeds practice where he worked as solicitor specialising in crown court cases while Ms Million assists the team in all aspects of criminal work and client care.
Shah Ahmed, who has also joined McCormicks Solicitors.
Peter Minnikin, head of the crime and fraud team at McCormicks, said:
“I believe there are few practices in the North Yorkshire region which can offer the breadth and depth of experience in crime, fraud and regulatory matters that our team can bring.”
Leadership programme to be held in Harrogate
Harrogate-based charity Henshaws is set to host a leadership event for local businesses.
The event, which will be held in partnership with 2inspire and Cedar Court Hotels Yorkshire, will take place at Cedar Court hotel in Harrogate on September 22 from 8am.
Businessman Rob Northfield, who has 40 years experience in business development and leadership training, will lead proceedings.
The event will be aimed at those who want to grow their career or personal ambitions.
Mr Northfield said:
“The leadership programme will help individuals reflect on their life, actions and therefore results.”
The day will include a breakfast and networking lunch. Tickets are £75 and all proceeds will go towards Henshaws.

A Harrogate law firm has appointed a commercial property specialist to its team.
Claire Baker-Kemp has joined McCormicks, which is based on East Parade, as a senior associate.
Since qualifying as a solicitor, Ms Baker-Kemp has acted for the NHS, a major supermarket chain, the Department for Transport, an international shopping centre developer, financial institutions and local authorities.
She joined McCormicks from an investment company and has experienced in dealing with acquisition and disposal of freehold and commercial leasehold properties, as well as transactional landlord and tenant work.

Harrogate firm sponsors Hull City Ladies FC
A Harrogate law firm has agreed a sponsorship deal with Hull City Ladies FC.
The agreement will see Truth Legal sponsor the club’s away shirt for the forthcoming 2023/24 season.
The firm, which is based on Victoria Avenue, said the move would help grow the women’s game in Yorkshire.

A Harrogate law firm has hired a new solicitor in an effort to bolster its disputes team.
LCF Law has hired Will Bates, who has joined the company from fellow Harrogate-firm McCormicks.
Mr Bates has advised companies and individuals on all types of commercial disputes over the last five years since qualifying and has particular expertise in sport related disputes.

Harrogate businesses invited to quiz broadband experts

Businesses in Harrogate will have the chance to quiz broadband experts at two drop-in sessions next month.
NYnet’s connectivity team will be at Indulge Café on Hornbeam Park to answer questions from companies and provide information on how to access the company’s high performance full fibre network.
The sessions are open to all businesses in the Harrogate district, including those on Hornbeam Park.
Alastair Taylor, CEO of NYnet, said:
“These sessions are a chance for local businesses to sit down with our team over coffee and have an informal chat about any issues they might be experiencing with connectivity.

More than 100 entries have been submitted across 10 categories, highlighting the strength of the business community in the Harrogate district.
The four judges are Marcus Boardall, CEO of Reed Boardall, Black Sheep Brewery CEO Charlene Lyons, Cloud Nine founder and CEO Martin Rae, and James Farrar, COO of York and North Yorkshire Local Enterprise Partnership (pictured).

New appointments boost Harrogate law firm

A Harrogate law firm has begun the year with a series of appointments and promotions.
McCormicks Solicitors has added David Leuchars to its corporate and commercial department, assisting its head, James Towler in business law matters.
Stuart Farrar joins the residential conveyancing team, bringing more than 40 years’ experience, while Kate Develly has been offered a training contract in the crime and fraud department.
She joined McCormicks just over a year ago and has recently become accredited to advise clients at the police station. Her former role has been filled by Helen Ramsden, who has been promoted to criminal law executive.
