CrossFit Harrogate prepares for charity challenge

Thirty members of Crossfit Harrogate will take on the national three peaks challenge this weekend to raise money for four charities.

The super-fit bunch will attempt to scale the three highest mountains in Scotland, England and Wales — Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon — in 24 hours.

It involves walking 23 miles and climbing more than 3,000 metres, which is twice the ascent of the Yorkshire three peaks. Participants also have to drive 460 miles.

The challenge will raise money and awareness for Harrogate Homeless Project, Saint Michael’s Hospice, Williams Syndrome Association and Artizan International.

Beth Crewe, who is among those taking part, said:

“The gym is raising funds for four charities, three of which are local, which all have special places in the hearts of the members.

“We decided to take on this challenge to not only push ourselves physically and mentally but to help make a difference to those in need of support from these amazing charities at this difficult time.”

More than £4,600 has already been pledged towards the £5,000 target. You can donate here.

Knaresborough gym to host CrossFit qualifier this weekend

A major national functional fitness competition is being held in the Harrogate district for the first time on Sunday.

Rep it Out will see 80 athletes from across the country pair up and compete at Black Wolf Fitness, at Rabbit Hill near Knaresborough.

The top athletes will go through to the CrossFit-licensed national finals.

It is a huge coup for the district as competitions of this scale are usually held in the south.

Sophie Laird, event organiser, said:

“Since we relaunched Rep It Out this year, we’ve been looking for gyms across the UK to hold our activation events, giving as many people as possible a chance to enter and experience being on the competition floor.

“The majority of competitions are held in the Midlands or London, so when we came across Black Wolf Fitness, we knew it would be the perfect spot.

“We hope to see some new faces entering the competition scene and can’t wait to test everybody’s fitness.”

Rep It Out is a same-sex pairs competition, which will feature ‘scaled’ and advanced ‘RX’ divisions.

Each division, which will include athletes from CrossFit Harrogate, will complete four functional fitness workouts across the day.

Winners from each category will be entered into the CrossFit-licensed Rep It Out finals.

Black Wolf Fitness launched at Rabbit Hill Business Park in August 2020 and now has more than 100 members.

Danielle Broughton, who owns the gym with her fiancé Adam Whiter, said:

“It’s a huge opportunity for Black Wolf to have high-end athletes coming to the gym and such a well-known competition foundation, which allows us to be on the CrossFit functional fitness map.

“It’s also great for our athletes to be able to be able to perform in such a big competition on home ground.

“It also allows Adam and I to see how such a big competition is run and hopefully in the future we will be able to do something similar.”

Ms Broughton said both she and Adam felt a huge sense of pride that their members were at a standard to be able to compete at this level.

She said:

“Being able to have a membership that are able to compete comfortably in a competition like this is a huge achievement. Many of them only started competing a year ago, so it is huge really. It is testament to the consistency of our members.

“We are really excited. We all know what the atmosphere is like at a competition and to see it going on our box is going to be pretty awesome.

“To see athletes come from outside and use this space that we have created really is a dream.”

Spectators will be allowed at the event, however they must register for a free ticket here.

Sunday’s workouts will be released on the Instagram page @repitoutuk.

Gyms: Excitement mounts but group classes still limited

Gyms and leisure centres in the Harrogate district are preparing to reopen next week after more than three months of lockdown.

But although thousands of people in the district are desperate to start lunging, pressing and punching their way back to fitness, gym life won’t be completely back to normal.

Ongoing social distancing restrictions mean many group training classes still won’t be available.

Ryan Tansley, owner of CrossFit Harrogate, at Hornbeam Park, said he was looking forward to reopening but because it couldn’t offer structured classes, it would operate more along the lines of an open gym.

CrossFit Harrogate has offered discounted rates to members during lockdown, and provided Zoom classes and various challenges, such as performing the most burpees.

Mr Tansley said:

“People have had to adapt but it will be so good to get back to seeing people.”

No sparring allowed

Contact won’t be allowed at Harrogate boxing and martial arts gym H Hour Boxing and Kao Loi, when it reopens next week, which means no sparring and pad work.

Owner Rob Smith said it will operate predominantly as a fitness gym rather than a combat gym until the situation changes. He said:

“We will do boxing training for fitness but our bread and butter is training people to compete and that’s on hold.”

The gym has produced many champion fighters, including Thai boxer Rachael Jones MacKenzie, but the impact of lockdown has left its future uncertain.

Rob Smith is the head coach at H Hour Amateur Boxing Gym.

Mr Smith plans to skydive to raise £5,000 to keep the gym afloat three days before his 50th birthday next month.

Ripon refurbishment

As owner of Intrim in Ripon for the last 18 years, Phill McKay has been flying the flag for independent gyms at a time when big chains have been taking over. He said:

“We are as excited as our members are. We have air-con going in this week and a gym makeover so we will be ready to receive old and new members. We have also rebranded and have new equipment planned.”

Absolute Fitness in Boroughbridge, run by former World’s Strongest Man competitor Darren Sadler, who now promotes the biggest strongman events on the planet, is also reopening on Monday.

Functional fitness in Knaresborough

Because it has outdoor space, Knaresborough functional fitness facility Black Wolf Fitness has been able to provide outdoor training since March 29.
Owner Ad Whiter said:
“We are so excited to get back to some form of normality and finally have our fitness community back at Black Wolf HQ.
“They are what has kept us alive during this topsy-turvy time, and we can’t wait to welcome them back and celebrate what is hopefully set to be a fantastic summer.”
Harrogate Gymnastics Club staged some outdoor sessions this week to prepare some gymnasts for the move inside next week.
A spokeswoman said:
“We are pretty much going back to the same restrictions as before the January lockdown with the addition of twice weekly testing for all staff.
“We have been on restricted numbers since we were allowed to reopen last year so for use things are similar to before Christmas.”

Pure Gym in Harrogate will open on Monday. The gym will be open 24 hours but studio classes will not begin until May 17.

Leisure facilities managed by Harrogate Borough Council are also due to resume on Monday. But again, things aren’t totally back to normal. A council spokesman said:

“The pool at The Hydro in Harrogate and Nidderdale Pool will reopen on April 12 for lane swimming and family sessions.

“Brimhams fitness centres at The Hydro, Nidderdale Leisure Centre and Ripon Leisure Centre will also reopen to members only.

“Turkish Baths Harrogate will reopen from this date for treatments only.”
