Work is scheduled to begin on Monday to reconstruct a road near Pateley Bridge — two-and-a-half years after it was damaged by storms.
The section of the B6265 at Red Brae Bank, Bewerley, suffered a landslip when storms in February 2020 caused the land below the roads to subside.
Since then, the road has been kept open because of the introduction of a weight limit and temporary traffic lights.
Cllr Keane Duncan, North Yorkshire County Council’s executive member for highways and transportation, said:
“Following extensive ground investigations and negotiations with the private landowner, we are now able to undertake this work to stabilise the land, reconstruct the carriageway and improve the drainage of the road and the land supporting it.
“When this is complete, we will be able to remove the temporary traffic lights and the weight limit.”
The £480,000 scheme will involve stabilising the top of the slope next to the road, reconstructing the carriageway, repairing the highway drainage and stabilising, drainage and landscaping work on the slope below the carriageway.
The work is expected to take nine weeks, with a planned completion date of Friday, December 16.
The scheme requires the road to be closed from October 17 to December 9.
A diversion will be in place via Pateley Bridge; the B6451 Dacre; Menwith Hill Road; Duck Street and Greenhow Hill village.
Temporary traffic lights will be in place during the remainder of the work.
Cllr Andrew Murday, county councillor for Pateley Bridge and Nidderdale, said:
“We have been waiting for these repairs to be done for a long time. The closure will be very inconvenient for people, but the work needs to be done and when it is complete people will feel the benefit.”

Four men arrested after BT cable theft in Harrogate district
Four men have been arrested after a BT cable was stolen last week near Green Hammerton.
North Yorkshire Police said the men, aged 21, 38, 43 and 52 were arrested in connection with the theft at 11.11pm on August 8.
The cable was stolen from a BT cable junction box on the B6265 between Little Ouseburn and Green Hammerton.
Phone cable theft, which disrupts services for customers, has increased because of the value of copper wires.
The four men were arrested when officers pulled over their white van, which was displaying the false registration plates YT16 YTS and had been stolen.

The 21-year-old man has been charged with driving while disqualified and driving without insurance. He remains on bail.
The three other men have been released under investigation while police enquiries continue.

The main road into Ripon from Pateley Bridge has closed due to roadworks, forcing motorists to take a lengthy diversion into the city.
Work on the B6265 prompted the closure of the road from Eavestone to Bishopton, which is the main western approach to Ripon and includes traffic for Fountains Abbey and Studley Park.
Work started yesterday and is scheduled to continue until Friday next week.
One Stray Ferret reader got in touch to say he hadn’t seen any signs in advance warning of the work and was therefore forced to turn around near Sawley when he encountered it. This meant his usual seven-minute journey into the city took over 30 minutes.

The Stray Ferret contacted North Yorkshire County Council, which is the highways authority, for further details of the work and to inquire whether warnings were issued in advance.
We did not receive a response by the time of publication but the council’s interactive roadworks map states.
“Highway resurfacing works along the B6265 between Ripon and Eavestone. Road closure in force however access for residential and businesses will be made available wherever possible.
“The works will be phased to allow a shorter diversion via Sawley/Ripley for the most part of the works.
“There are a number of other road closures around Ripon city centre this week. Including Luncarr Lanne in Copt Hewick for resurfacing works, this road will reopen Friday afternoon.”
