The York & North Yorkshire Growth Hub has taken on three new team members to support local businesses and entrepreneurs in the Harrogate area.

Faye Greer-Pickup, Jack Colding, and Adrian O’Neill will each bring different skillsets and experiences to bear in providing free and impartial support and access to a range of resources.

New delivery officer Faye Greer-Pickup has a background in economic development and will provide support to people looking to start businesses in North Yorkshire. Her work will involve finding and referring businesses to the Growth Hub’s range of support for start-ups, including the Strive Live Start-Up Incubator in the new year.

She said:

“I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to work with pre-start and early-stage start-ups full-time, helping them navigate the path to success.”

Jack Colding, the Growth Hub’s new environment and sustainability business relationship manager, will work with businesses to reduce costs and stay ahead of new regulations. He’ll also help businesses access North Yorkshire Council‘s £22.3 million of Shared Prosperity Funding to help them achieve net zero goals. He said:

“Net zero is a tremendous business opportunity. It can save costs and boost your brand while helping the environment.”

Adrian O’Neill, the new skills specialist business relationship manager, will help North Yorkshire businesses improve recruitment and retention with long-term skills development plans, and help them access skills bootcamps, with up to 90% of all training costs met by York & North Yorkshire LEP. He said:

“I believe that well-trained and motivated employees are the cornerstone of business success. I’m here to identify and address skills gaps, provide solutions, and connect businesses with the right training providers.”

Theakston’s hires new director

Masham brewery T&R Theakston has appointed a new finance director.

Chartered accountant Scott Everett previously worked for 17 years at drinks dispenser company Innserve, most recently as director of finance and supply chain. He said:

“The Theakston name is synonymous with a rich heritage, expert craftsmanship and, of course, great beers. I am extremely proud to be joining such a celebrated brewery and being part of the exciting future it has planned.”

Having recently celebrated 20 years since the brewery returned to independent family control, following a buyback from Scottish and Newcastle in 2003, Scott’s appointment forms part of a wider strategic change in the brewery’s structure to enable ambitious growth plans.

It follows the recent announcement that Simon Theakston will take on the role of chairman and Richard Bradbury will become sole managing director from 2024.

“We are delighted to welcome Scott to the team at this significant time for the brewery. A Harrogate construction management company has made two senior appointments.

Artium Construction, which specialises in design and build projects, has taken on Martin Watson as managing director and shareholder and Joe McDermott as director and shareholder. The pair, both formerly of Leeds-based GMI Construction Group, join Garry Shaw, who was appointed director and shareholder of Artium Construction last year.

Artium Construction currently has an order book worth £12 million for its first year of operation, with projects in Harrogate, Ripon and York. The directors intend to build it into a £50m turnover construction business over the next five years.

New workshop for tourism businesses

Tourism and hospitality businesses planning their marketing for 2024 are being invited to a new workshop organised by the York & North Yorkshire Growth Hub.

The training is available exclusively to hotels, B&Bs, self-catering operators, wedding venues, restaurants, spas, visitor attractions and events organisers, and will be delivered by Martin Evans of The Tourism Business, a York-based marketing consultancy. Martin has over two decades’ experience working with more than 150 of the UK’s leading hotels, attractions and other tourism operators.

The free workshop,  which will explore marketing and promotional ideas that attendees can put into practice in their own business, will be held place on Thursday, October 26 at Harrogate Co-Lab, next to the Convention Centre. The session will take place from 10am to 4pm and a light lunch and refreshments will be provided.

A new aesthetics clinic has opened in Harrogate today – to offer skin tightening, slimming treatments and vaginal rejuvenation.

HIFU Clinics UK specialises in high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU), so the treatments are non-surgical.

Michelle Clarke, who has been in the industry for 13 years and is the director of HIFU Clinics UK, says vaginal rejuvenation can be a “life-changing” treatment.

She told the Stray Ferret:

“We are now offering vaginal rejuvenation – changes happen in the female body after childbirth and menopause, so our treatments can help with things like dryness, bladder weakness and more.

“It’s not really talked about, a lot of people don’t even know you can get help for this, but this can be life-changing.”

HIFU Clinics UK, which is now taking appointments for its new clinic on Westmoreland Street just off Skipton Road, opened its first clinic in Wakefield three years ago.

Ms Clarke said many of her clients were looking for a more natural look:

“Our clients can walk out down the street and to their families, without people knowing they have had any work done.

“They just look fresher and well-rested. So it is a completely different approach to other aesthetic clinics.”

The newly renovated clinic has two rooms for HIFU clients and will be renting out two of its other rooms to other high-end professionals, like beauticians or chiropractors.

While the clinic opened in Harrogate today, there will be an official opening event in September with demonstrations, drinks, canapes and special offers.

A panel of four leading business people faces a tough task today as judging takes place in the first ever Stray Ferret Business Awards.

More than 100 entries have been submitted across 10 categories, highlighting the strength of the business community in the Harrogate district.

The four judges are Marcus Boardall, CEO of Reed Boardall, Black Sheep Brewery CEO Charlene Lyons, Cloud Nine founder and CEO Martin Rae, and James Farrar, COO of York and North Yorkshire Local Enterprise Partnership (pictured).

They will meet in central Harrogate to spend today going over all the entries, selecting those most deserving of our 10 awards.

From growing businesses to the up-and-coming stars of the future, the categories are designed to allow businesses to showcase their strengths. Each is sponsored by a leading local business, and the headline sponsor for the awards scheme is Prosperis.

The shortlists will be announced this Friday, January 20.

New appointments boost Harrogate law firm

A Harrogate law firm has begun the year with a series of appointments and promotions.

McCormicks Solicitors has added David Leuchars to its corporate and commercial department, assisting its head, James Towler in business law matters.

Stuart Farrar joins the residential conveyancing team, bringing more than 40 years’ experience, while Kate Develly has been offered a training contract in the crime and fraud department.

She joined McCormicks just over a year ago and has recently become accredited to advise clients at the police station. Her former role has been filled by Helen Ramsden, who has been promoted to criminal law executive.

Managing partner Stephen Hopwood said:

“It is always good to welcome new talent to the team and these appointments and promotions will help to bolster some very busy departments.”

Harrogate Borough Council’s Conservative leader Richard Cooper has made changes to his top team, 10 months before the local authority is abolished.

Cllr Cooper has appointed Cllr Sam Gibbs, who represents Harrogate Valley Gardens, as cabinet member for the environment, waste reduction and recycling brief on his six-person cabinet.

Rebecca Burnett, who represents Harrogate St George’s, has been appointed chair of the planning committee, which makes decisions on major housing and development projects.

Ed Darling, who was elected in Knaresborough Castle, is the new chair of the 12-person licensing committee, which can grant or refuse alcohol and Hackney cab licences.

Sam Gibbs

Cllr Gibbs, who has represented Valley Gardens since 2018, will replace Cllr Andrew Paraskos.

Collecting household waste is one of the council’s biggest responsibilities and this year it will be trialling wheelie bins for housing recycling.

According to the Richmond Conservatives website, Cllr Gibbs is employed as the constituency agent for Chancellor and Richmond MP Rishi Sunak.

He is also a county councillor, winning the Valley Gardens & Central division in this month’s local elections.

Rebecca Burnett

Rebecca Burnett replaces Cllr John Mann as chair of the planning committee.

Cllr Burnett has been a councillor since 2014 but will be stepping down from local politics when the council is abolished in April 2023.

She was the cabinet member for planning from 2015 until 2020, during the formation of Harrogate district Local Plan 2014-35, which allocates over 13,000 new homes for building in the district up to 2035.

Other appointments

Ed Darling will become the new chair of the licensing committee, replacing Cllr Victoria Oldham, who will become the council’s final Mayor.

The Stray Ferret asked Cllr Gibbs, Cllr Burnett and Cllr Darling for comment but none responded.

Harrogate’s Great Yorkshire Showground is to accept walk-ins this afternoon to help with the roll-out of the covid booster programme.

Those eligible for a booster can just turn-up between 1.30pm and 4pm at the showground. Currently, there are no other walk-in sessions scheduled for the site, which re-opened this week.

To qualify, people need to be aged 40 and above. At least six months must have passed since their second dose and they must have no coronavirus symptoms.

The showground was due to close on December 22 but it now looks set to continue until March, although this has yet to be confirmed.
